Hey all you police officers! Is it illegal to carry a pocket knife in Oklahoma?
The blade is about 3 inches long and has a serrated edge and I carry it because I live alone in the worst neighborhood and I hate guns so I feel safe when I carry a pocket knife on me. Is it illegal to do this?
According to state law, Title ยง21-1272, it is legal to carry it.
Oklahoma law only makes it illegal to carry a switchblade, double-edged knife (dagger), or a fixed bladed knife (bowie knife). There is no law that makes a limitation on folding knives. Assisted Opening knives are legal in the state too, but most cops do not know the difference between then and switchblades, so you risk being arrested and then let go later when their captain or the judge tells them they made a mistake.
Some local cities make tighter laws based on blade length, but it is almost unheard of in the United States to ban all knives from being carried, as this would cripple shipping companies, construction workers, retail stockers and cooks doing their normal work.
"one special dude," my sincere apologies. The police officer who took your knife basically robbed you. There is no such thing as a law that measures using the width of your palm, this an urban legend. Either he felt you were some kind of ruffian who should not have a knife in his personal opinion and he wanted to let you go, or he wanted to keep it for himself. Either way he technically stole it from you and deprived you of due process.
