Neck Knife
if someone is stabbed in the neck and the knife is still impaled in their neck...should it be removed first...
I believe that if a person is stabbed in the neck and the knife is impaled in their neck..the knife SHOULDN'T be removed the person should be rushed to the hospital to be stablized FIRST. My bf just was certified as an EMT and he believes that the knife HAS to be removed FIRST so that the bleeding may be stopped by applying pressure(I believe that if the patient is bleeding profusely then trying to put gauze around the womb-WITHOUT REMOVING THE KNIFE-is better). I TOTALLY DISAGREE and I watch enough Discovery Health to know that patients that arrive at the hospital from the ambulances with ANYTHING impaled in them are FIRST stabilized and then RUSHED to the OR. Now we got into a big disagreement about this and I feel I am right an dhe feels he is right too(I was soo mad that I told him I hope he never gets a patient like that on his shift because he would SURELY kill them)
You are 100% right! The knife should be wrapped in gauze and the patient stabilized. Removing the object can cause more damage than it did while being inserted.Most objects like this will require surgical removal to prevent damage to any nerves, muscles, blood supplies, etc...
