One of our Traveling Nurses from Cirrus Medical Staffing recently shared a story with us about one of her many adventures on the road as a traveling nurse.
"After working in the Emergency Department at various locations throughout the country, you start to think you have seen it all! I thought so until I spent a night working in a region of the United States that is considered “cowboy country”. On this particular night, a group of cowboys brought in a friend with whom they had been playing poker all night. The gentleman was very pale and obviously in shock. At the time he had started becoming pale and lethargic, his friends reported that they had noticed a considerable amount of blood around the patient’s right foot. Although the patient was wearing boots, blood was seeping through the leather around the lower leg and ankle. When we cut the boot off, we discovered what appeared to be knife lacerations around his lower leg and ankle. The cuts were sutured by the Emergency Room physician and fluids were given to the patient. When asked what happened to his leg, the patient explained that he had just purchased the boots and they were difficult to put on. When he put them on, his ankle began itching. As a solution, he decided to extend a long kitchen knife down in the boot to scratch his ankle!! Obviously when he did this, he lacerated his leg. He had no idea he had done so until he had lost a considerable amount of blood!"
