What’s Better, Butterfly Knives Or Switchblades?
My friend owns a butterfly and i own a switchblade. He can open it pretty quickly but i can open my switchblade in half the time he takes to open his butterfly.
Why do people make a big deal over butterfly knives? Are there any advantages butterfly knives have over switchblades?
Take this into consideration. His knife is 4 inches, mine is 3 but it has a wider blade and a hook thing.
I have to admit though. Butterfly knives look pretty nice.
I pray I am never in a knife fight...but if that should be my fate someday, I hope that my adversary is carrying one of those junky POS switchblade knives. They are probably the flimsiest knives ever made.
On the other hand, the one knife that I hope I never encounter is a Cold Steel Tanto. I have seen videos of these knives going through car doors.
My daddy taught me never to bring a knife too a gun fight. But between the 2 neither are good switch blades are fast but have a weak springs that can fail and butter flies are to slow by the time you get it out you’ve already been taken down by a foot sweep! Try a stiletto it’s a steel shank that comes straight out of a cylinder almost looks like a pen!

the butterfly knife is a more sturdy knife in general a person can draw the knife faster depending on their skill level and their technique also they are not the real version the balisong made in the phillipenes are not the same knife but still it is the wielder that decides the fight also about those cold steel tantos a screwdriver could stab through a car door as well almost any knife could be deadly also both are illegal to carry

I used to own a butterfly knife in Argentina, where I actually needed it to defend myself on one occasion. I didn’t use it, I just took it out and spun it fast which was enough to make the two guys who were trying to mug me turn tail and run.
I think purely for the fear factor involved a butterfly knife will scare them out of making you use it. People figure if you’re handy enough to really get a butterfly going FAST then you will know how to do some damage with it too.

An automatic is your best choice. A butterfly, unless you are really good, is pretty awkward to try and use for normal knife functions. I have an SOGST-01, it is the SOG automatic. Very good knife.

From a functional point of view, a balisong is the stronger design (no lock or spring mechanism that could fail), however they do take longer to open, even if you are very quick, and it’s much easier to cut yourself with them if you don’t know what you’re doing.
From a pure ‘spectacle’ point of view, balisongs are more impressive with the variety of ‘tricks’ you can do with them. An automatic doesn’t really open any quicker than a lot of manual knives, and is even slower than a knife with an Emerson style ‘wave’ opening feature.
I guess I just don’t see the point of automatics beyond their collectable value.
EDIT: I suppose with gloves on, or very cold hands, an automatic would be much quicker to use than a manual or ‘wave’ knife, so they do make sense for ‘rescue’ (military, fire, coastguard etc.) personnel who might need a fast opening folder.

A balisong is neat, requires skills, and simple to make(for me cause i made one) as for the switch blade it’s to complicated to make since it has so many pieces but can be open quickly with out trying.
